We honestly have no words to fully express how moved and inspired we were at the grand opening of The Mermaid Café. From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear this is something truly special. That’s why we knew immediately we had to share their story on our podcast, The Best of San Antonio.
Leah Meyer’s journey is one of hope, heart, and a powerful example of what community and inclusion can look like in action. The episode drops next week, and we can’t wait for you to hear firsthand how this family is changing lives—one cup at a time.
What is The Mermaid Café?
The Mermaid Café is the lifelong dream of Leah Meyer, a vibrant young woman with Down Syndrome whose love for cooking and community sparked a vision of a place where everyone is welcome, everyone belongs, and everyone contributes.
Leah’s family—her parents Karen and Drew, alongside siblings Anna and Kane—have poured their hearts and expertise into bringing that dream to life. With Karen’s background as a speech-language pathologist and Drew’s experience managing food trucks, they’ve created more than just a café. It’s a space designed for inclusion, equipped with adaptive tools, and powered by meaningful employment for people of all abilities.
At The Mermaid Café, every latte, pastry, and sandwich is crafted with care by a team empowered through disabilities-first hiring and adaptive training. This café is redefining what’s possible—not only in the kitchen, but throughout the workplace and the broader San Antonio community.
