Stone Oak: Neighborhood Guide

Stone Oak is one of the best-known neighborhoods on San Antonio’s far north side, a master-planned community of more than 35 subdivisions set in the rolling hills where the city meets the edge of the Texas Hill Country. It offers a wide mix of home styles and price points, from garden homes to guard-gated golf estates, along with easy access to shopping, dining, medical care, and major commuter routes.

Location

Stone Oak sits north of Loop 1604, between Blanco Road on the west and U.S. Highway 281 on the east, in the 78258 and 78260 ZIP codes of Bexar County. Stone Oak Parkway is its main east–west corridor, and Hardy Oak Boulevard and Huebner Road run through the community as well. The 281/1604 interchange puts residents about 20 minutes from San Antonio International Airport and roughly 25–30 minutes from downtown outside rush hour.

Plenty of nearby businesses and schools carry the Stone Oak name without being inside its official boundaries. The Stone Oak Property Owners Association publishes the official boundary map.

Golf, Parks and Recreation

Stone Oak is home to two golf destinations: The Club at Sonterra, a private club off Sonterra Boulevard, and Canyon Springs Golf Club in the community’s northern hills. Stone Oak Park offers trails and green space, and many subdivisions have their own pools, playgrounds, sport courts, and walking paths. The Hill Country terrain gives much of the neighborhood elevated views and a greener, hillier feel than most of the city.

Homes and Real Estate

Homes in Stone Oak include single-family homes, garden and patio homes, gated communities, and custom estates on golf course and hillside lots. Most were built from the late 1980s through the 2010s, generally with stone, brick, or stucco exteriors. Sonterra, built around a country club, was among the first neighborhoods developed, and today very little undeveloped land remains.

Schools

Most of Stone Oak is served by North East ISD. Because attendance zones vary by street, buyers should confirm school assignments for any specific address with the district.

Shopping, Dining and Healthcare

Stone Oak Parkway, the U.S. 281 frontage roads, and the Loop 1604 corridor are lined with grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and everyday services, so most errands stay close to home. Methodist Hospital Stone Oak and a cluster of medical offices sit just next to the neighborhood.

HOAs and the Stone Oak POA

Stone Oak has two layers of governance. The Stone Oak Property Owners Association (SOPOA) maintains common areas and enforces the original master plan, which governs land use, signage, and building height. Changes to that plan require a majority vote of the POA. Most individual subdivisions also have their own homeowners association to handle neighborhood-level matters. Property owners pay assessments to both.

History

Stone Oak was the first master-planned community in Bexar County. In 1985, a group of private developers led by Dan Parman filed a master plan for what was then ranchland, mapping out residential, commercial, and multifamily areas before construction began. Development slowed during the Savings and Loan Crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with other developers later stepping in. Once the economy recovered, the community grew into one of San Antonio’s most established north-side neighborhoods.
