Embrace the Timeless Beauty of Monte Vista: A Historic Gem in San Antonio

A Local's Perspective

There's nothing better than hearing the story of a neighborhood from someone who actually knows it.

Bill Baird | San Antonio Local, artist and writer.

Monte Vista is one of San Antonio's coolest neighborhoods, the city's last remnant of its 1880's 'gilded age,' where one house after another was extravagant trophy, flaunting the newfound wealth of Texas' biggest movers and shakers, its wildcatters and oilmen and cattle barons and titans of industry.

It's still a jewel, but thankfully you can get around now by foot and not get rear-ended by a horse and buggy. The neighborhood has some of San Antonio's finest institutions: Trinity University, San Antonio College, Landa Library, and San Pedro Springs Park – the actual birthplace of the city. There are restaurants galore, bars, bookstores, record shops. Walkable, relaxed, tons to see, do, eat. Perfect place to raise a family. All the amenities of a big city, nestled into a historically intoxicating suburb, one of the state's first. What's not to love?

Monte Vista's houses may be big, but they're not McMansions – they exude a classical, refined sensibility, built from local, durable materials. Long after the rest of the city's suburbs have decomposed and blown away, these homes will endure.

Not just the homes, but the porches – ah, the porches of Monte Vista! These wrap-around porches are big enough for an elephant to take a nap. Big enough for an entire high school reunion to meet. I could go on. They are simply exquisite. In the days before A/C, folks would sleep on these porches to catch the evening breeze. Now they're a living embodiment of the phrase 'Texas-sized.'

The whole neighborhood is one of the United States' largest historic districts – a pristine slice of palatial majesty and architectural achievement, just north of downtown. In 1998, Monte Vista was added to the prestigious National Register of Historic Places.

What we now call Monte Vista was originally three different developments: Laurel Heights, Belknap Place, and Monte Vista. The neighborhood was originally a goat pasture, believe it or not, but in the 1880's, developers moved in. Rather than the neighborhood having a cohesive designer and vision, the area was settled and developed block by block with different business folks.

Frost Carvel and Robert McGarraugh were big mover and shaker developers. Atlee Ayers and Alfred Giles, two of SA's most famous architects, designed many of the homes. Wallace Rogers and Russell C. Hill, two of Monte Vista's early developers, named the neighborhood after holding a naming contest with a prize of $100 in gold.

Some of San Antonio's most famous names have lived in the neighborhood. Maury Maverick – famed father of La Villita and FDR's right-hand man, lived in the neighborhood, on Woodlawn Ave. The cattle baron Herbert Kokernot lived at 114 East Kings Highway. Famed painters Julian and Eleanor R. Onderdonk lived in the hood too. More recently, Mike Nesmith from The Monkees lived in the area while attending SAC.

Monte Vista isn't just history and legacy – it's about what's happening now – which is a lot. On its east side, you've got Trinity University, where famed SA architect O'Neil Ford turned the Trinity campus from an old rock quarry into one of the city's best designed, most serene spots. It's one of the great walks in San Antonio that few folks know about. Keep walking and you'll be in Brackenridge Park's Japanese Tea Garden – my favorite spot in SA. This walk in particular – through Trinity to Brackenridge – is my favorite walk in town.

On Monte Vista's southern end, you've got San Pedro Springs Park, one of the older parks in the US; the pool is a great spot for seasonal swimming. The San Pedro Playhouse holds theater classes and performances for folks of all ages. My daughter did a camp there and loved it.

The nearby San Pedro library is nice, but way nicer is the Landa Library, which is closer to Trinity. The Landa, former residence of SA industrialist Harry Landa, is a stunning Spanish-style architecture mansion, resplendent with mosaic tiles, spiral staircase, the works.

The Landa Library is one of the best spots in the city to take kiddos, bar none. The library itself is well-stocked and a delightful interior. Outside, there's trees to climb and a playground the kids love. I spent many a day there when my kids were younger.

If you're hungry, La Fonda on Main is the oldest Mexican restaurant in town – and one of the best. For pizza, there's Barbaro or Lovers. There's the original Taco Cabana at San Pedro and Hildebrand (not what it used to be but still pretty good!) and Mr. Juicy across the street for the city's best burgers. Outlaw Kitchens is elevated cuisine, one of the best dining spots in the city. Curry Boys BBQ is mind-blowingly good.

Culturally, there's a ton going on. Trinity always has interesting lectures and events and their jazz station, KRTU, is one of the best in the nation. Bluebonnet is the best neighborhood bookstore, tons of used books. There are a few record shops too; my favorite is Hogwild – San Antonio's OG spot for vinyl. Robot Monster guitars is an amazing vintage guitar and music equipment shop – the best in town. Just on the other side of Trinity from Monte Vista, you've got St. Mary's Street – the best live music in SA and a good spot for bar-hopping. My favorite spot is the Lonesome Rose; best bar in town. Tons of touring acts come through the Paper Tiger. For straight up beers, Joey's is a cool old-school vibe. Little Death is a SA icon for its diverse wine selection and fresh bread. Just too many spots to choose from, so pace yourself. There are taco trucks along the street too.

School-wise, there's a few very good options in Monte Vista. You've got some of the city's finest private schools – Keystone and San Antonio Academy, plus Great Hearts over at Temple Beth-El. There's the aforementioned libraries, playgrounds, and the whole area is just very chill. Definitely family friendly. But even if you don't have kids, Monte Vista has kind of got it all. The homes are inspiring (some of the most beautiful in Texas), there's tons to see, do, eat, it's all walkable, runnable, bikeable, and it's right next to downtown.
